Bark Scorpion Under Ultra Violet Light
The Arizona Bark Scorpion is the most venomous scorpion in North America. It is found in most areas of Arizona and southern Utah. The scorpion is an amazing animal. It can live months without food or water and can crawl through a slot as thin and a nickel. Some can live under water for up to two days and it glows a stunning neon blue when an ultra violet light is shined on its exoskeleton.
Scorpions should never be considered a toy or pet, they should only be considered as a living specimen. You should never take them out of their case or enclosure because of their unexpected speed and ability to find a slot or space you cannot access. You should never handle them, even with gloves, because they are so fast!
They hunt at night and hide during the day. Their eye sight is poor so the rely on ambush hunting. They sting their pray with the poisonous stinger located in the tail. Once the pray is incapacitated they begin feeding.
Their sting is nothing to take lightly, they inject a potent neurotoxin. Adult scorpions have the ability to regulate the amount of venom they inject in their pray, while babies scorpions do not, making a sting from a baby scorpion more dangerous. While it’s very unlikely a human would die from a Bark Scorpion sting; a sting needs immediate medical attention. The symptoms include intense pain around the sting area 24-72 hours after the sting. The victim may also experience tingling, nausea and vomiting. If stung, seek medical attention as soon as possible to minimize the effects of the venom.
